The APRIL-NNL Alliance is committed to collaborate in the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 Initiative working towards the EU Framework Programme Horizon 2020. Together with international partners APRIL-NNL will respond to Horizon 2020 calls. The Alliance is lead by the Centre of Expertise Healthwise of RuG/FEB, the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and is supported by the Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands. In 2013, Northern Netherlands was awarded the (at that moment) highest ranking of three stars as a Reference Site of the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. In 2016 the highest ranking was four stars and Northern Netherlands was awarded that too. Clearly, Northern-Netherlands region is a leader in Europe when it comes to Healthy Ageing, according to the European Commission.
